The career and shortened glory of the Czech Republic’s most famous figure skater. Reflections by H. Múdra, E. Pilarová, F. Pechar, K. Polák, J. Hromada, J. Jakubisko, J. Múdry and J. Žídek. Document of K. Vondrová
Slim, elegant, always with a bit of a melancholic air, gifted with talent, drive and an immense self-discipline. Such was Ondrej Nepela, to this day unrivalled in the world of both Czechoslovakian and Czech figure skating. He was an athlete at a time when sportsmen satisfied not only their own natural desire to be the best, but also had to fall in line with social expectations, frequently enforced uncompromisingly. Few could have imagined the stress he had to endure and how he must have longed to live completely free, in a life where he could show his sexual orientation openly. His story is one of human identity and the desire to display it freely. And what bitter a price must sometimes be paid. Revisit his life in the documentary “What Nepela Danced For”, made after the passing of many years. Hilda Múdra, Juraj Jakubisko, Jozef Žídek, Karol Divín, Karol Polák, Jiří Hromada, Eva Pilarová, František Pechar and others share their experiences and memories.
