Tribute to John Greyson
An avant-garde Canadian director, screenwriter and producer started his career in the 80s as a journalist for a Toronto magazine about art and culture. During his stay in Toronto, he discovered the beauty of video art and started to make his first short films (e.g. The Perils of Pedagogy, Moscow Does Not Believe in Queers ).
He made a good impression in the International Film Festival in Berlin in 1988 with his full-length debut Urinal . He managed to reach the international audience with his third film, Zero Patience (1993), an extravagant musical about AIDS and also with Lilies (1996), a tempting story of revenge based on Michel Marco Bouchard’s play Les feluettes.
Greyson is very popular among film critics. However, he evokes a rather ambivalent reaction among the audience due to his flamboyant staginess, thematic complexity of his film style and a frank portrayal of the homosexual themes in his works. The awards for “best film” in festivals all over the world as well as the awards from the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television only prove Greyson’s status of one of the most important Canadian filmmakers of today.
Mezipatra also present his films Making of Monsters , Uncut and Proteus .
John Greyson will be present at the festival.
The retrospective profile is held under the auspices of H. E. Michael Calcott, Ambassador of Canada to the Czech Republic.
